The section carries out fundamental experimental and theoretical research in gas-phase chemistry, the chemistry at interfaces, and condensed phase, often inspired by environmental issues or by problems in atmospheric chemistry and protein folding. The approach is both experimental and theoretical and concerns the properties of atmospheric aerosols, the properties and reactions of new molecules, radicals, dimers and clusters in the gas phase and isotope effects of chemical reactions.
Our approach draws heavily on thermodynamics, spectroscopy, reaction kinetics and mechanism, photochemistry and applied quantum chemistry. New experimental and theoretical methods are constantly developed in the group. A new method for air cleaning has recently been patented.
