Viruses – dead or alive?
As SARS-CoV-2 ravages the world, researchers are still debating whether this coronavirus, comprising DNA and RNA, a little enzyme and a protein coating, is alive. Viruses have no metabolism and cannot reproduce without a host. However, research has shown that viruses have a common evolutionary origin with our cells. The discussion does not change the never-ending battle humans have with deadly viruses, and since viruses have no metabolism, treatment and combating transmission are difficult.
