Biography

To accommodate the future demands for an increasing protein supply for food and feed, there is an unmet need for new crops and technologies capable of producing sustainable protein. The European protein import comprises about 70% of the total protein demand. Specifically, imported protein from crops such as soybean has a high environmental footprint, including land use, emission of greenhouse gasses and deforestation. In recent years, microalgae have arisen as a promising alternative protein source.
