Biography

Valentina Di Nisio is a postdoctoral researcher at Karolinska Institutet, where she studies female reproductive biology and fertility preservation. Her work explores how the ovary responds to stressors such as medical treatments, aging, and environmental exposures. She has developed innovative three-dimensional ovarian models, or “ovarioids,” using silk scaffolds and primary human cells to better mimic the natural ovarian environment. These models provide new opportunities to investigate how toxic substances, cancer therapies, or hormonal stimulation affect ovarian function and long-term fertility. Di Nisio’s research also examines mechanisms like the endocannabinoid system in reproductive tissues, as well as cellular responses to irradiation and repeated gonadotropin stimulation. She contributes to projects that aim to safeguard fertility in young women undergoing medical treatments, with the goal of turning laboratory insights into practical strategies for protecting reproduction.
