Biography

The Focus on Female Health research group at the University of Oulu, led by Professor Terhi Piltonen, investigates long-term health outcomes of common gynecological conditions, particularly PCOS and endometriosis. Their research explores the role of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) in PCOS, mechanisms affecting endometrial function, and the metabolic and inflammatory effects of hormonal contraceptives. The group also studies factors influencing endometrial regeneration related to implantation and cancer. Their goal is to improve awareness, treatment guidelines, and health equity through national and international collaborations. Professor Piltonen, an expert in reproductive endocrinology, has focused on hyperandrogenism, mental health, and metabolic risks in PCOS. Her team recently examined gynecological symptoms in 2,000 women from the Northern Finland birth cohort. She holds key editorial and leadership roles in major endocrinology and gynecology societies.
