Biography
Sofie Beier is Professor of Design Research at the Royal Danish Academy, where she heads the Centre for Visibility Design. With a background in both design practice and perceptual psychology, she investigates how typography influences the way we read. Her research focuses on legibility and readability, exploring how factors such as letterform, spacing, typeface familiarity and visual crowding affect reading performance. Beier has conducted extensive eye-tracking studies and developed insights into how design can support both fluent readers and people with visual or cognitive challenges. She is the author of Reading Letters: Designing for Legibility and the Type Tricks series, widely used by designers and researchers. Her work bridges science and design, offering both theoretical knowledge and practical tools for improving communication in contexts ranging from books and screens to signage and wayfinding.
