Biography
Per Bækgaard is Associate Professor at DTU Compute, where he leads the Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence study programme. His research lies at the intersection of human-computer interaction, user experience, cognitive neuroscience, and physiological sensing. He explores how subtle signals such as pupil dilation and gaze patterns can reveal mental states and guide the design of digital systems that adapt intelligently to users’ needs. Current projects include Reading the Reader, which uses AI to tailor text presentation to individual reading patterns and support people with visual impairments. He also works on digital health technologies, conversational agents, and adaptive interfaces that can improve wellbeing and accessibility. With a broad publication record and experience supervising young researchers, he bridges engineering, cognition, and design to make AI more responsive to people.
