Biography
David Hay is professor at the University of Edinburgh whose research focuses on stem cell biology, liver regeneration, and regenerative medicine. His work investigates how human pluripotent stem cells can be guided to form functional liver cells and tissues for disease modelling, drug development and future therapies.
A central theme in his research is recreating human liver development in the laboratory. By combining stem cell biology, tissue engineering, and advanced cell culture technologies, he develops liver organoids and models that mimic the structure and function of the human liver. These systems are used to study liver disease, evaluate drug safety, and explore regenerative treatments.
His research aims to translate stem cell discoveries into clinical applications that reduce reliance on donor organs and animal models. By linking developmental biology with regenerative medicine, Hay’s work contributes to approaches for treating liver disease and advancing precision medicine.
