Biography
Boyd Swinburn is a professor of population nutrition and global health at the University of Auckland whose research focuses on obesity, food systems, and the environmental and societal drivers of chronic disease. His work has helped shift the understanding of obesity from an issue of individual responsibility to one shaped by interactions between biology, food environments, economics, and public policy.
A central theme in his research is how food systems influence dietary behaviour and health. He has been leading contributor to international efforts examining the commercial, social, and environmental determinants of obesity, including work with global commissions and policy initiatives.
By combining public health, epidemiology, and systems science, Swinburn’s research aims to identify strategies for preventing obesity and improving population health. His work has had a major influence on global debates about food policy, health equity, and the factors that drive the obesity epidemic.
