Biography
Prof. Agbaje is an award-winning physician and associate professor of clinical epidemiology and child health. His research explores the causal links between aerobic fitness, physical activity, sedentary behavior, obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome with arterial, cardiac, liver, and kidney function from childhood to young adulthood.
He discovered childhood smoking as a cause of premature cardiac damage, finding that smoking prevalence increased 15-fold between ages 13-17. He also identified arterial stiffness as a novel risk factor for pediatric obesity and insulin resistance, adolescence as the critical time to interrupt the fat mass-insulin resistance cycle, and light-intensity physical activity as a powerful antidote to excessive fat accumulation from childhood sedentariness. Recently, he found waist-to-height ratio to be a superior measure of childhood obesity compared to BMI.
