Biografi
Thomas Just Sørensen is Professor of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen, working within inorganic chemistry, nanochemistry and materials science. His research centres on how molecular and atomic structure—especially symmetry and deviations from ideal symmetry—controls physical properties such as magnetism, luminescence and electronic behaviour.
Just Sørensen is known for developing quantitative frameworks that describe and measure structural distortion in molecules and solids. These approaches provide a rigorous language for linking subtle structural changes to measurable material properties. His research combines synthesis, crystallography, spectroscopy and theoretical analysis to explore structure–property relationships across length scales, from coordination compounds to extended materials. By introducing transferable descriptors of symmetry breaking, his work has influenced how chemists analyse structure in complex systems and contributed to a more systematic understanding.
