Simon Glerup is an associate professor at Aarhus University’s Department of Biomedicine working on neurobiology and protein regulation. His research focuses on how cells control, traffic, and degrade proteins—processes essential for cellular health and often disrupted in neurological disease. He studies how disease-relevant proteins, including those outside cells or on cell surfaces, can be captured and redirected into the cell’s own degradation systems. By combining molecular biology, cell biology, and translational approaches, he explores strategies to actively remove harmful proteins rather than simply inhibiting them. His work is particularly relevant for neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, where accumulation of specific proteins drives pathology, and aims to turn the cell’s own machinery into a therapeutic tool for targeting otherwise “undruggable” proteins.
