Silvia Vignolini is a materials scientist and director at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces whose research focuses on bio-inspired and sustainable materials. Her work explores how plants and other organisms create vivid structural colours and optical effects without pigments, using microscopic architectures that manipulate light.
A central theme in her research is translating natural design principles into functional materials. By combining chemistry, physics, and materials science, she develops renewable and biodegradable materials with optical, mechanical, and environmental applications, including sustainable colourants, sensors, and packaging technologies. Much of her work is inspired by cellulose and natural biomaterials.
Vignolini’s research bridges studies of light–matter interactions with applied materials innovation. By recreating structures found in nature, her work aims to develop environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic materials and pigments.
