Ryan Sinclair Paterson is a postdoctoral researcher at the Globe Institute’s Section for Geogenetics, University of Copenhagen. His work sits at the interface of palaeoproteomics, molecular phylogeny, and evolutionary anthropology.
Trained in biological anthropology (University of Toronto) and later in proteomics and fossil studies, his PhD centered on recovering protein sequences from Asian Miocene primates such as Gigantopithecus, combining these with 3D morphometrics to probe sexual dimorphism and mating systems in extinct hominoids.
He has since extended that work to push the limits of ancient protein recovery, contributing to methods for deep-time phylogenetic inference from dental enamel and other tissues.
Paterson’s research helps bridge gaps where ancient DNA cannot survive, opening a molecular window into deep evolutionary lineages and informing our understanding of primate and mammal evolution over geological timescales.
