Robert Vandenberg is a professor of pharmacology at the University of Sydney whose research focuses on neurotransmitter transporters and mechanisms regulating communication between nerve cells. His work investigates how transport proteins control signalling in the nervous system and how dysfunction contributes to neurological disease and chronic pain.
A central theme in his research is understanding the structure, function, and pharmacology of glycine and neurotransmitter transporters. By combining electrophysiology, molecular pharmacology, and structural approaches, he studies how these proteins move neurotransmitters across cell membranes and how drugs can modify activity.
His research has contributed to understanding how transporter proteins can be targeted therapeutically in disorders involving disrupted neurotransmission. By linking molecular mechanisms with pharmacological function, Vandenberg’s work supports development of drugs for neurological conditions and pain management.
