Biografi
Rima Chakaroun is a physician-scientist and clinical researcher at the University of Gothenburg, working within the Bäckhed research group. Her research focuses on metabolic health, insulin resistance and obesity, with particular emphasis on why individuals with similar body weight can have markedly different metabolic risk profiles.
Chakaroun’s work combines detailed clinical phenotyping with molecular analyses to identify early metabolic disturbances that are not captured by conventional measures such as BMI. She is especially interested in how adipose tissue function, lipid metabolism and systemic inflammation contribute to cardiometabolic disease risk in people who may otherwise appear healthy. By integrating patient-based studies with mechanistic insight, her research helps clarify heterogeneity in metabolic disease and supports more precise risk stratification and prevention strategies. Her work has been recognised with international awards.
