Niels Risum, MD, PhD, is a clinical researcher in cardiology at Rigshospitalet, specializing in cardiac electrophysiology and device therapy. He investigates mechanisms and predictors of ventricular arrhythmias, optimization of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) and cardiac resynchronization therapy, and novel risk-stratification markers using echocardiographic deformation imaging. His work includes contributions to clinical trials such as the POTCAST trial, which explores whether elevating potassium levels can reduce arrhythmia burden in high-risk patients. He also leads studies using speckle-tracking echocardiography to detect subtle myocardial dysfunction associated with arrhythmia recurrence. With over a hundred scientific papers and a research focus on translating advanced imaging and biomarker techniques into improved patient care, Risum bridges clinical care and innovation in heart rhythm management.
