Margarita Poderyte is a PhD fellow in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen. Her research explores how chemical up-cycling of widely used plastics can tackle both waste and greenhouse-gas challenges. In recent work she led a team that converted polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) waste into a sorbent material capable of efficiently capturing CO₂, turning discarded plastic into an active component of climate mitigation. The method is notable for its mild conditions, industrial-scalability and dual benefit: valorising low-quality plastic while reducing atmospheric carbon. Poderyte’s studies also span selective amide formation using carbon dioxide and the chemical recycling of blended fibres. By blending sustainable chemistry with circular-economy thinking, she seeks solutions that make pollutants part of the answer rather than simply the problem.
