Mads Albertsen is Professor of Microbial Ecology and Biotechnology at Aalborg University. His research focuses on understanding the structure, function and dynamics of complex microbial communities, particularly in engineered and environmental systems.
Albertsen is known for advancing genome-resolved metagenomics and bioinformatic approaches that make it possible to study microorganisms that cannot be cultivated in the laboratory. By reconstructing genomes directly from environmental samples, his work provides detailed insight into microbial metabolism, interactions and community organisation. He has applied these methods to a wide range of systems, including wastewater treatment, environmental biotechnology and natural microbial ecosystems. His research bridges fundamental microbiology and applied biotechnology, contributing to the development of sustainable solutions based on microbial processes and a deeper understanding of how microbial communities function at ecosystem level.
