Lotte Bang Pedersen is Professor of Cell Biology at the University of Copenhagen, where she leads the Cilia Group at the Department of Biology. Her research explores how tiny hair-like structures called cilia act as the cell’s antennae — sensing and relaying signals that keep organs and tissues in balance. She investigates how cilia build, maintain, and fine-tune their internal machinery, and what happens when these processes fail. Defects in cilia can disrupt vital signaling pathways and lead to severe diseases known as ciliopathies, affecting vision, kidneys, and metabolism. Pedersen’s group combines live-cell imaging, proteomics, and molecular biology to uncover the transport systems and molecular switches that regulate ciliary function. She has contributed to several international collaborations and EU-funded projects, and serves as Reviewing Editor at eLife as well as peer reviewer for leading scientific journals and funding agencies.
