Kalinka Sand Knudsen is a researcher affiliated with Aalborg University, working in microbial ecology and environmental microbiology. Her research focuses on microorganisms that influence atmospheric processes, particularly microbes involved in methane cycling.
Knudsen studies how microbial communities in soils and subsurface environments consume methane and contribute to regulating greenhouse gas levels. Her work combines field studies, molecular techniques and genomic analyses to identify key microbial players and understand how environmental conditions shape their activity. She is particularly interested in uncovering hidden microbial processes that act as natural filters of greenhouse gases across landscapes. By linking microbial function to ecosystem-level effects, her research contributes to a deeper understanding of the biological controls on climate-relevant gas fluxes and their potential role in mitigating emissions.
