Biografi

Johnson Lok is a researcher at the University of Eastern Finland, specialising in the gut-liver axis and metabolic liver disease. With a background in biochemistry and food safety from the University of Hong Kong, his early work explored how natural compounds protect liver cells. Today, his research focuses on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (MASLD), using engineered gut bacteria to deliver therapeutic molecules directly inside the body. He combines techniques such as metagenomics, metabolomics, imaging, and hormonal profiling to understand how the gut microbiome influences liver health. Lok has co-authored studies showing that genetically modified probiotics can reduce liver fat and inflammation in animal models. He also contributes to clinical reviews of fasting and exercise as tools to improve metabolic health. His broader goal is to develop new microbiome-based strategies to diagnose and treat liver disease.
