Biografi

Joey Lau Börjesson is an Associate Professor at the Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University, where she leads a research group focused on protecting transplanted insulin-producing beta cells. Her work explores cellular stress responses, protein aggregation and survival mechanisms, aiming to understand how cells cope with stress at the molecular level and how failures in these systems contribute to disease.
She is particularly known for her research on intracellular amyloid formation and toxic protein assemblies that emerge under stress conditions and impair cell function. Using experimental cell models alongside molecular and biochemical approaches, her group investigates how cells regulate protein homeostasis and attempt to limit damage in adverse environments. Her research bridges fundamental cell biology with disease-relevant mechanisms, with the goal of improving the long-term success of cell-based therapies for type 1 diabetes.
