Jan-Wilhelm Kornfeld is Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Southern Denmark. His research focuses on metabolic regulation, adipose tissue and liver biology, and how obesity contributes to cardiometabolic disease.
Kornfeld studies how gene regulation, epigenetic processes and cellular signalling in metabolic tissues influence whole-body metabolism. He is particularly interested in how obesity leaves molecular marks that affect health across the lifespan and across generations. His work combines molecular biology, animal models, human organoids and clinical data to understand how metabolic dysfunction develops.
His research links basic mechanisms to clinical outcomes and contributes to understanding obesity, type 2 diabetes and related disorders. In 2026, he inaugurated the Interdisciplinary Centre for RNA Innovation and Cardiometabolic Health (INRICH) at SDU, aiming to translate findings into RNA-based therapies.
