Dr. Jan Michael Schuller is a structural biologist and biochemist at Philipps University Marburg and the Center for Synthetic Microbiology (SYNMIKRO), where he leads the Schuller Lab. His research focuses on the molecular machines used by microbes to convert carbon dioxide into useful compounds—processes that could be key to future green technologies. By combining cryo-electron microscopy, molecular biology, and biochemistry, Schuller’s team has uncovered the atomic structures of complex enzyme assemblies such as CO₂-reducing nanowires. These insights reveal how certain microorganisms achieve ultra-efficient energy conversion, offering inspiration for synthetic biology and climate-friendly bioproduction. A recipient of the EMBO Young Investigator Award in 2023, Schuller is committed to bridging basic research and applied innovation. He believes microbes hold enormous potential in the fight against climate change—and that understanding their inner workings is a crucial first step.
