Biografi

Esben Søndergaard is a professor and physician at Aarhus University and Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus. His research focuses on human metabolism, particularly how glucose and lipid turnover are regulated in health and metabolic disease. He conducts controlled clinical studies to investigate how organs such as the liver, adipose tissue, and skeletal muscle respond to changes in diet, fasting, and hormonal signals.
Søndergaard combines tracer techniques with blood sampling and physiological measurements to map metabolic fluxes in real time. A central theme in his work is metabolic flexibility—how the body shifts between fuel sources—and how this is impaired in obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. He also studies how interventions, including dietary changes and fasting, influence whole-body metabolism and vascular function, linking detailed metabolic measurements with clinical outcomes to inform prevention and treatment strategies.
