Biografi

Claus Varnum is a professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Southern Denmark and a consultant surgeon. His research focuses on joint diseases, particularly osteoarthritis, and outcomes following hip and knee replacement surgery. He works with large clinical datasets and patient registries to understand long-term outcomes, complications, and factors that influence recovery after joint surgery.

A central theme in his work is improving patient pathways and decision-making in orthopaedics—identifying which patients benefit most from surgery and how timing, technique, and rehabilitation affect results. He also studies revision surgery and implant performance to optimise durability and function over time. By linking clinical practice with population-level data, his research aims to improve treatment strategies and quality of life for patients with degenerative joint disease.
